Every Saturday morning, I call my friend who is 94 years old.  Grace has always been very active and has a sharp mind.  Last August, she fell, fractured a bone in her leg and had to have surgery.  She also has macular degeneration, but continues to read as much as possible.  She finally gave up driving and now has to rely on others to take her places or to ride the senior's bus to Walmart. Last Saturday was no different, I called her and she was feeling pretty chipper.  She always asks about my walk with Max and what the weather is like.  After we chatted for a while, she said, "I did something naughty yesterday.  My son would disown me if I told him."  I asked what she did and she said, "I was bored and tired of seeing everything the same.  Since I couldn't get out, I decided to move my living room furniture around so that I had a different view."  I scolded her, but she said that she was happy with the new look.  Can you blame...

For the past three years, we've taken ten days and traveled to Florida to visit my aunt and to get some time away from the cold and snowy winter.  This year was no different.  We left on a sunny, cool day and took our time, stopping here and there to visit different sights along the way.  We stopped in Tupelo, MS at the Oren Dunn Museum and replica of how Tupelo appeared in the late 1800's.  There was also a Veteran's Museum on site and we sat and chatted with three Veterans.  There were war artifacts from WWI, WWII, Korea, VietNam, Iraq and Afghanistan.  We stopped at the Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus, GA.  Another era and history lesson for us.  It was rather strange, because we were basically alone touring this museum, but so much history to learn about.  Times that we remember from our history, but will our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren?  We need to make sure that these times are shared and these museums are e...

We've been visiting my Aunt this week.  She's only 85, but... Some health issues, but... She's a home body.  I keep trying to encourage her to move a little and tell her that she'll feel better and have more energy, but to no avail.  We've had good conversations and a great visit, but still I want more for her. My Mom raised her and so we remembered and shared our love.  Her husband and only son have passed away.  She doesn't have other family members, so I call each week and visit her once a year (she lives in Florida).  She has a few friends, but they only eat together.  She sits in her apartment, day in and day out.  Sometimes reading, watching tv or just sitting.  I feel frustrated that I can't do more or be closer, but I do what I can and I know this time together and my weekly calls make her happy.
