Thoughts on Vacation Fun Driving - lots of traffic New sights, new roads Thank goodness for texting More traffic at a standstill Late arrival - who will get there first? Arrival, unload the cars, unpack What's for dinner? Tired from driving and sitting in traffic Tomorrow, what's our schedule? Breakfast, SUIT UP The shuttle comes every half hour Let's go to the beach Get the toys, towels, sunscreen Excitement The girls can't wait - let's go! Find a place to put our "stuff" The waves, sand, people Let's build a sand castle Let's get in the water Finding seashells Burying feet in the sand Oh, no, it can't be time to leave! Tomorrow we'll go again. Each day, more excitement and fun The pirate ship cruise Aye, Matey.  Arg. More beach time, more pool time More good food cooked by Grandpa Tired, worn out, a nap (for adults and girls) The week went on and came quickly to an end Time to pack up and head for home. ...

Tuesday SOL 6/10/14 - Celebrating Hubby's Birthday

Image
Tomorrow is hubby's birthday.   A day to celebrate a special man. He started his celebration with his trip to Montana. We continued the celebration with  a dinner out with friends and a cake. This weekend we'll extend the  celebration with a trip to Florida  with family to enjoy fun in the  sun with our granddaughters. And, I celebrate him today in this slice. To the best Hubby ever,  Happy Birthday!

The Girls of Atomic City by Denise Kiernan

Goodreads summary:  " The incredible story of the young women of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who unwittingly played a crucial role in one of the most significant moments in U.S. history. The Tennessee town of Oak Ridge was created from scratch in 1942. One of the Manhattan Project’s secret cities, it didn’t appear on any maps until 1949, and yet at the height of World War II it was using more electricity than New York City and was home to more than 75,000 people, many of them young women recruited from small towns across the South. Their jobs were shrouded in mystery, but they were buoyed by a sense of shared purpose, close friendships—and a surplus of handsome scientists and Army men! But against this vibrant wartime backdrop, a darker story was unfolding. The penalty for talking about their work—even the most innocuous details—was job loss and eviction. One woman was recruited to spy on her coworkers. They all knew something big was happening at Oak Ridge, but few could ...

Light on Snow by Anita Shreve

Goodreads summary:  " What makes a family? That's what twelve-year-old Nicky Dillon wonders after she and her widowed father discover a wailing abandoned baby in the snow-filled woods near their New Hampshire home. Through the days that follow, the Dillons and an unexpected visitor who soon turns up at their door-a young woman evidently haunted by her own terrible choices-face a thicket of decisions, each seeming to carry equal possibilities of heartbreak and redemption. Writing with all the emotional resonance that has drawn millions of readers around the world to her fiction, Anita Shreve unfolds in Light on Snow a tender and surprising novel about love and its consequences." Quick, easy read, but very well written.   Finished:  6/7/14

Tuesday SOL - 6/3/14 - He's Back Home

Ten days ago, Hubby left me and Max to fend for ourselves.  Oh, not for good, just for a trip to Montana to spend some time visiting with his cousins and do some shooting. When he first mentioned this trip, I thought to myself: How wonderful The whole house to myself Peace and quiet No TV No sports or History Channel Doing what I want, when I want (I do this whether he's here or not) Losing some weight because I wouldn't be eating his delicious meals No answering to "Hon, how do I do this?"  Or, "Why did the computer hiccup?" And then he left and reality set in: The whole house to myself - too quiet, no hugs & kisses, nobody to talk to except Max I had to take care of Max every day including the days I work Nobody to cook for me - I can only eat so many grilled cheese sandwiches There's nothing else on TV to watch - except sports and the History channel Lose weight - ha - I snacked the whole time I had to clean the house by myse...
