Tueday 4/29/14 - The Hummingbirds Are Back

Image
I had seen them briefly a couple of weeks ago and thought to myself that I needed to get the feeders out.  But it turned cooler and I forgot.  Last week I was sitting on the front porch reading and first one went buzzing by and then another hovered directly in front of me, as if to say, "Where's our juice?  Did you forget about us?"  Off they flew.  Back and forth several more times.  I got the hint.  I went inside, got the feeders, filled them and hung them.  They seemed to sense that I had done what they asked. Trying to get pictures of them feeding or hovering is quite a fete.  I did manage to get one as he briefly took a sip and them zoom, he was off. Another came by and was ready to land.  They have been giving me a show all day long.  Two of them swooping, chasing, playing, sipping and off again. To sit on the tree branch. And then along came the woodpecker to pose for me.  He, at least, sat still lo...

Tuesday SOL 4/22/14 - The M & M Guy

Image
Fifteen years ago when I retired from Elgin Sweeper, I was presented with a "M & M pillow".  It had arms and legs, eyelashes and weighed in at about 5 pounds.  Everyone from Sweeper autographed it and it has been a wonderful memory of a great place to work with some fantastic people.  It had found a place on the loft and I didn't pay a lot of attention to it until... Last summer when Michelle & the girls were visiting.  M discovered the "M & M guy" one day and had to bring it downstairs.  It was almost bigger than her.  Of course, since there was only ONE "M & M guy", there were battles, so "M & M" had to be put up.  Problem solved.... After they left, I thought it was time to dismantle the "M & M guy" and just keep the shell - you know trying to downsize.  This is what she looked like dismantled. Occasionally last fall, M & P (especially M) would ask where the "M & M guy" was. ...

The Aviator's Wife - Melanie Benjamin

Goodreads Summary:  " For much of her life, Anne Morrow, the shy daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, has stood in the shadows of those around her, including her millionaire father and vibrant older sister, who often steals the spotlight. Then Anne, a college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family. There she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the celebrated aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. Hounded by adoring crowds and hunted by an insatiable press, Charles shields himself and his new bride from prying eyes, leaving Anne to feel her life falling back into the shadows. In the years that follow, despite her own major achieveme...

Tuesday SOL - 4/15/14 - Max Writes - My Latest Adventure

Image
Last week I was lounging around on the front porch with Mom & Dad.  The sun was shining and was warm on my old bones.  I was quite content, but then I heard a commotion on the road.  I lifted up my eye, then my head, then I sat up.  The neighbors kids were riding their big wheels on the road and making lots of noise.  Their Mom was running after them and trying to get them to stop.  My friend, their little dog, followed along behind.  I figured I better go see what was happening and off the porch I dashed.  Mom yelled, then Dad, but I don't always listen and there must be something interesting happening on the road. I sniffed and ran.  My nose told me to keep going.  Mom & Dad kept calling me.  I ignored them.  They gave up and knew that I would return - eventually. I traveled down near the resort to see some of my other friends.  But, wait, there were some really big trucks down there.  I needed to see ...

Tuesday SOL - 4/8/14 - Sightings During My Walk

Image
Saturday was such a beautiful day that I took an extra walk (without Max) just to take in all the beauty that God is blessing us with after a long, cold, snowy, icy winter. The dandelions have already sprouted their bright yellow flowers in abundance.   The daffodils are being watched by the "Gone Fishing" bear. The redbuds have just a tinge of purple. The dogwoods seem to be getting bigger by the minute. The violets have pushed through the leaves. The leaves are just beginning as buds on the tree limbs. Our neighbor's horse had to see what I was doing. Some of the bushes even sprouted Easter eggs. See if you can spot all of them in the collage.  The rain yesterday and partial sun today will help to green the grass (and weeds) and make the colors even more brilliant.   I can see God's beauty coming through the new beginnings of Spring and embracing every moment.

Tuesday SOL 4/1/14 - Uneventful Trip Home

Image
I always like to say that our travels are uneventful, if The weather is clear The roads are good There are no accidents The car runs good No unnecessary stops along the way Arriving safely at home So like the majority of our travels, the trip back from IL was uneventful. Even though it was a most enjoyable week, it is so good to be home. The sun is shining The temps are in the 60's The deer are in the front yard The daffodils are in full bloom Along with some flowering trees Uneventful travels are best.
