Friendship Bread by Darien Gee

An anonymous gift of Amish Friendship Bread and starter sends a woman on a journey she never could have anticipated.  Julia's 10 year old son died from a wasp sting and was in such a deep depression that she had no hope, was estranged from her family and had shut out her husband and only functioned enough to care for her daughter.  One day she discovered a plate of Friendship Bread along with the starter on their front porch and her daughter convinced her to follow the instructions.  This was only the beginning of something wonderful happening in Julia's life and in the lives of many other people in this small town. After a while, the "starter" seemed to be a nuisance, but became the drawing together, sharing and caring of many people.

A delightful story, a reminder of how delicate life is and what can happen with one kind act. 

I remember when I received some of the starter - the bread was tasty and it was fun - for a while, but then you ran out of people to give it to and I used what I had and let it go.  Maybe it's time to try the recipe and get it started again.

    Paying it forward does make a huge difference - especially when it happens at just the right time. I think it would be a great idea to start up the bread . . . and yes, at some point in time you have to put an end to it. It could go on and on and on . . . Sounds like a good read.

SOL 18/31 - The Realtor's Came Yesterday

Yesterday, the realtor's came to look at our house.  Our realtor only brings his own people thru, so it wasn't too bad.  Max slept thru most of it until they went upstairs where he was sleeping.  He barked briefly, came downstairs, got petted and pampered a little.  They walked thru the house, in the bedroom, up the stairs, down the stairs, looked things over, asked a few questions and 15 minutes later out the door they went. Our realtor told me he has had a couple of calls - one from a neighbor (being nosy) and another from a realtor who said this house is exactly what his clients are looking for, but they had just left the day before it was listed.  But could they put in an offer sight unseen?  Really???  Is this just a realtor's ploy to make us feel good or is it real?  No offer yet, but who knows.  It could happen. I breathed a sigh of relief.  Max looked at me as if to say "Is that it?  Can I go back to sleep now?". ...

Tuesday SOL 10/23/12 - Mr. Pockets goes to school

Last week there was an article in our local newspaper that I found fascinating and wanted to share it with you.  This is a story about a dog who listens as children read out loud.  It's a new program in our school district and I'm proud that our district is using this innovative program to help students learn. Animals are so loving, caring and accepting, and the students love to have someone that they can read to and to be loved unconditionally.
