A well written historical novel that takes you through the struggles, sorrows, happiness and will power of a young girl. She fights not only for herself, but to keep her family together. There were many twists and turns throughout the novel which made you keep wanting more. I learned about more about the British and Irish, the Protestants and Catholics, their struggles/battles, causes for the divide. Falvey created a beautiful picture in my mind of the area in Ireland where she grew up - she made me feel like I was there walking up the hill with her.
My favorite character was Eileen (of course, she was the main character), but was a strong willed child turned into a very strong willed woman. She was courageous and knew what she wanted - until it came to the two men in her life.
It was interesting read about another country and the life style at the beginning of the 20th century. A good read.
