Tuesday SOL July 31, 2012 - Could It Be?
First, there was one
and then another
and yet another
Could they get together?
The sky darkened,
the wind blew
A clamp of thunder
A streak of lightening
Would it just blow over?
A SPLAT
and then another
and yet another
Oh, please let it rain
The trees cried,
their leaves stretched out
looking heavenward.
More SPLATS and
then the sky opened up
Rain came pouring down
The trees, plants, grass and animals
said, "Thank You"
It came for a while and
quenched the earth.
Not an end to the drought,
but a drink for today.
Refreshing and cleansing.
Thank you, God
and then another
and yet another
Could they get together?
The sky darkened,
the wind blew
A clamp of thunder
A streak of lightening
Would it just blow over?
A SPLAT
and then another
and yet another
Oh, please let it rain
The trees cried,
their leaves stretched out
looking heavenward.
More SPLATS and
then the sky opened up
Rain came pouring down
The trees, plants, grass and animals
said, "Thank You"
It came for a while and
quenched the earth.
Not an end to the drought,
but a drink for today.
Refreshing and cleansing.
Thank you, God

Yes, thank God for the rain! We finally got some too! This drought does remind me of the summer of 1988
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your poem! It captures our current thinking all across the country!
Splat! Loved how you began with the two clouds and "Could they get together?" Also appreciate your word choice throughout: trees cried, quenched the earth, a drink for today. It's been a tough summer for rain. Now, how much longer will it be again until another 'splat!'???
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous that you got some rain, it went right on past us and didn't leave any for our thirsty plants. Love the images you created with your words.
ReplyDeleteAs I sit here reading and writing, outside your poem just came true. Oh, beautiful sound! Splat! Yes, thank you, God.
ReplyDeleteI loved this line....Oh, please let it rain
ReplyDeleteThe trees cried,
their leaves stretched out
looking heavenward. Here in Illinois, my mother-in-law from a farming family prayed this prayer last night at grace. It rained last night. I'm so thankful for that 'drink' they had. The trees are happy this morning
I took my grandson out into the plains yesterday to a wildlife refuge. On the way, we saw the stunted corn, the smaller sunflowers in the fields-so tragic. Even in dry Colorado, we've never seen it so dry. We too got a little rain yesterday-wonderful. I like that early line "Could they get together?" It's an intriguing lead-I wondered what you were going to write about. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh and that's exactly how it has been. Your description is perfect!!! And what's so wonderful it's been raining at night so we can still enjoy the beautiful days of summer!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely poem - for a much needed event! Great descriptions!
ReplyDeleteLovely description! We've been getting some overnight rains lately.. but not nearly enough.
