Tuesday SOL 11/6/12 A Harrowing Experience

I thought about writing about the election or the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy, but them something happened closer to home...

My dearest friend was bitten by a dog....

C was standing in her back yard watching a black dog harass her neighbor's dogs, when suddenly the dog turned toward her.  He started running followed by a teenage boy (who was apparently trying to catch the dog).    The dog ran straight for her with teeth bared and before she knew what happened, he had bitten her on the side of her leg just below her knee - tearing her jeans.  She screamed at the kid who turned to look at her, and then rapidly ran after the dog.  She said she will never forget the look on his face.

Her husband told her to call the police and he got into his truck and followed the dog and boy.  Three squad cars were at their house within minutes and they took off in the chase.  One police officer found the dog (without the boy).  The dog was in the yard of an elderly couple and had them trapped on their porch.  The policeman used his taser three times, but it didn't phase the dog in the least.  And he was off and after many hours of searching, he was not to be found.

C went to the emergency room, had x-rays, the wound was cleaned and bandaged, she received a tetanus shot and was advised to start the rabies treatment.  But, she was holding out for a day to see if they would find the dog.

She was fairly certain of where the dog lived and went to confront the people.  The lady said that they didn't have a dog and didn't know what she was talking about.  C told her that she had seen the dog in this yard when she walked.  After about the ten minutes the lady finally admitted to having a dog and said that the dog sometimes gets loose and they don't see him for a day or two.  But that was as much as she would admit.

The police also checked out this house and the lady said they could search the house.  But we're pretty sure they took the dog someplace.

And so, with no other recourse, C has started the rabies treatment.  She told me about the procedure and it's not anything that I would want to go through.

How can people be so insensitive?  C didn't want anything other than to know if the dog was rabid or not.  What happens if that dog again bites or mauls someone?  The police are keeping a close watch for this dog, but it's doubtful that he will be found anytime soon.

Please keep C in your prayers that she will heal quickly and that the police will find the dog before something else happens.

  1. What a crazy, horrible story! My husband was bit once when a Saint Bernard attacked our greyhound. Our dog was bit, too, and had to have stitches. We also had to get policemen to investigate. But my husband was able to avoid rabies treatment. The woman promised to pay the vet bill, but, of course, we never got the check. I will keep your friend in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. This account touches close to home. One of our faculty was recently bitten by a dog (leg and hand) and her dog was injured too. We were all shaken by her experience as you have been by your friend's. Prayers for healing balm for your friend and success in the search for the dog.

  5. Scary. Just out right scary. And how terrible if the family does know where the dog is -- and all she wanted was an answer for her own health. She was brave to go to the house. I don't know if I would have done that. Prayers for quick healing.

  6. It's too bad they cannot find the dog so she can avoid the rabies treatment, but glad it was no worse. Scary that some are so irresponsible. My thoughts and prayers go out to your friend, Judy.
