Day 16 of 31 SOLSC - Growing up in the 1950's
I just read one of the Kids Blogs - they had just finished studying the 1950's. I loved their comments - "it was boring", "I loved Leave it to Beaver", they commented about the poodle skirts and rolled up jeans, standing up in class to answer questions. It was fun reading their comments on this era.
I was in elementary school during this time and some of the things I remember were:
We listened to The Lone Ranger, Fibber McGee & Molly, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, The Grand Ole Opry, Gildersleeves on the radio.
We had a black and white TV that we could only get three channels on.
We had a party line telephone and had to use the crank on the side of the phone to get the operator to make a call.
We didn't go out to eat once, twice, three times a week,,, - all meals were homemade - no processed foods.
We didn't have McDonald's.
We had sock hops
We wore dresses to school - no jeans
We played outside and created our own games
We worked around the house - and didn't get an allowance!
The space race and Sputnik
The Korean War
The concerns of Communism and Cuba.
Rock and Roll
Bringing baby chicks into the kitchen to keep them warm because the heater broke in the hen house.
Getting every imaginable disease because my brother brought them home from school.
Boring, yes probably to the kids today. But it was a great era to grow up in - the concerns were nothing like we have today for our children. We have come a long way since then - some good and some .....

Funny, how I've become so interested in the 50's...60's... my time for growing up. I never thought it was a good to be a kid then. But yes, I wouldn't trade it.

I love hearing about all points in history. It's crazy to think how much has changed in such a short time and both thrilling and terrifying to think what life will be like when our kids are in their 40's like I am.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Sounds idyllic and calm. Sure, there was stress, but you managed with your family. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
ReplyDeleteIt was your time. I think a time that life was simpler in it's own way. I think it sounds like more fun than when I grew up! Reminds me of that email I've received in the past about you'll remember . .. . if you grew up in the . . . fill in the year. Fun memories for you, I'm sure! Thanks for sharing Mom!
ReplyDeleteLife did seem easier and simpler especially compared to the kids today...but boring I think not...but growing up in the 60's and 70's we thought that time was a bit cooler ;-) but what did we know!
