Day 3 of 31 -SOLSC - Furniture Shopping

So off to the furniture stores we went. First one - a new one in town that said they had EVERYTHING - well, I'm not sure of their definition of "everything", but it was lacking in variety. The second one was better and they had a recliner that hubby really liked, but of course, it had a sold tag on it and no other in stock. And, they didn't have anything to go with it.
Next store, we walked and looked. We sat and tested the sofas. Then on to the recliners. Hubby sat in a few and found one to his liking. We checked with the saleslady and yes, it was in stock and she put a hold on it while we continued to shop. More browsing, more sitting and then, finally we saw one that we both liked - the fabric, the color, the style. But would it fit, which way would be put it. We had measurements, but my mind could not visualize it in our great room. Hubby said, no problem, it would fit whatever way I wanted it to go.
So we took the picture home. I looked and tried to visualize - no good. We have two focal points - the fireplace (my focal) and the tv (his focal). He says, my chair goes here, your's there, and the sofa with chaise right here. I still wasn't sure and just could not "see" what he was saying. So in his calm and problem solving nature, he said he would get some cardboard and make it the size of the sofa and I would then see that it would fit.
The next day I came home and there was the cardboard and yes, indeed it would fit, not only one way, but another way as well (great to know for rearranging). The next day he placed the order and it will arrive next week. And now, I'm having misgivings if this is really what I want....
I am so glad to hear about other people's struggles with furniture buying. You had me right there with you as well, feeling the frustration of not being able to find the right thing and decide on it once you think you did!
ReplyDeleteOh! Buyer's remorse! The bane of us all. I loved how your hubby made the cardboard cutouts to help you visualise!
ReplyDeletewow I'm so impressed with your hubby! Although my hubby's focal point is the same as your ;-) he would never want to shop with me..."what ever you want he would say..hmmm maybe that's why we've been together for 30 years! So glad you both found what you want!
ReplyDeleteI hate furniture shopping, or appliance shopping, any of those major purchases. Right now we are shopping for a new dishwasher. Actually, my husband is shopping and reading reviews. When he gets it narrowed down for me, then we'll talk.
ReplyDeleteI love that your husband made you a cutout so you could visualize. That's always my problem too. I just can't see it in my head.
Hope once the new furniture arrives you find that you made the right choice!
Judy, I had to laugh as I read this. It is so like many experiences I've had. The buyer's remorse is my husband. Me, I make the decision I stop trying to second guess it. That's a waste of my time. I hope it works out and you love it.
ReplyDeleteI should go furniture shopping with you. I'm a quick picker. I see something and go with my gut. I rarely look back. But then again, if I did it for you, you might not like my taste. (Sigh.) I guess I can't be of much help after all.
ReplyDeleteHope you love what arrives!
This is a tricky decision to make. I agree with others that the sofa-sized cardboard cut out is the star of the story. What a thoughtful, problem solving hubby.
ReplyDeleteI went through the same thing when we picked out our new sectional. How big? Would it fit? Jon used some tape on the carpet for the dimensions to help me "visualize" it. What would it look like? And then to pick out an entire couch fabric looking at a 1 inch square of fabric?!? And I doubted. I wondered. But I love it. I hope you do too and can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteAhh, the things our hubs will do to help us see! We're adopting a give away desk tomorrow! I hope it's the right choice to take on another trash and make it our treasure! I feel hesitant now!
