Tuesday SOLSC - 4/16/13 - A difficult week for Max
Off to the vet, she sedated him, took x-rays, showed them to Hubby and said, "He has Hip Dysplasia and Intervertebral Disc Disease." She gave him some drugs - pain pills, anti-inflamatory and Glousamine.
Max will be 12 later this year, so we know he is getting old in dog years. For the time being, the drugs are working and he doesn't struggle to get up after laying down. We take short walks and he continues to eat. He hasn't ventured upstairs and he only looks longingly at the couch - knowing that he doesn't have the "spring" in his back legs to get him up. But he has improved considerably over the past week and we can only hope that in another week he will be back to his former self (knowing that there will be a day when this diagnosis will get the best of him). Until that time, we will love him and cherish those moments of friskiness that he still can achieve.
Animals are another of God's blessings to us and we are grateful for continuing to have Max delight us with his antics.
So hard to watch these dear, four legged family members get older. Glad the vet was able to provide some relief!

ReplyDeletePets do grab a hold of our hearts. It's that unconditional love and always there to listen to us. Poor Max. I can see his big brown eyes looking in wonder and confusion. I hope the meds continue to provide relief for now.
ReplyDeleteOh Judy, this took me right back to our first furry baby. His name was Jake and he was a Golden retriever. Those big dogs have trouble with hips. Once we had him diagnosed and he got meds, the improvement was amazing. we just had to watch on wet, drizzly days and laying on the damp ground. He might not have bounded up onto the couch or into the car like he did when he was young, but it gave him a few more years with us, pain free.

Judy there is no question how important a pet is to a family! The love so unconditionally,and ask for so little in return. Good energy Max's way from me to him!

ReplyDeleteWe have a 13 year old Golden Retriever in the same condition. She still eats like she's starving and demands a walk every day. She's a big part of our family and, as long as she is still smiling, we don't mind how slow she is. May next week be way better.
