Tuesday SOLSC 12/17/13 - Advent By Candlelight

For the past seven years, our church women have been celebrating the season of Advent with an afternoon tea and light dinner and a program.  This year's Advent By Candlelight had to be postponed for a week due the inclement weather that we experienced last week.  We did a lot of scrambling to cancel the catered food, make sure the hostesses were still available to host their tables, make sure our guest speaker could rearrange her schedule, call all the ladies who had purchased tickets to see if they could still come.

We originally had 17 tables of 8 and 2 tables of 10 for a total of 156 women.  After all the calls were made, two hostesses and 26 women could not attend because of prior engagements.  We revised our food order and moved forward.  And then the dreaded forecast - once again they predicted freezing rain, sleet, ice, and snow for Friday and Saturday morning.  Should we move forward?  We didn't feel we had a choice since the food had been ordered and paid for.  So we prayed and prayed and prayed some more.

And if you didn't already know, the power of prayer really does work!  We only got rain and the temps hovered above the freezing mark.

Tables were set up, the hostesses arrived to decorate their tables and make them welcoming for their guests.  Unfortunately, our guest speaker came down with laryngitis, but fortunately, a contingency plan was in place and the show went on.  There were a few that didn't attend, but for those of us who did, it was a wonderful afternoon filled with song, scripture and sharing the meaning of the advent candles and a wonderful fellowship with our friends and some great food, especially the desserts made by our hostesses. 

This is a wonderful event to bring us out of the hustle and bustle of this busy season and to remind us about the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Savior.

    This sounds like a lovely tradition. I'm glad you were able to pull it all together. My slice today is also about a church party with a glitch. Amazing power of prayer!

    What a lovely tradition. I'm glad the weather cooperated this time. We have certainly gotten our share of winter weather this year.

    You got rain and we got the wet snow. :-) A special event to celebrate an event that changed the world. It's nice when you can step back and savor the reason we celebrate.

SOL 18/31 - The Realtor's Came Yesterday

Yesterday, the realtor's came to look at our house.  Our realtor only brings his own people thru, so it wasn't too bad.  Max slept thru most of it until they went upstairs where he was sleeping.  He barked briefly, came downstairs, got petted and pampered a little.  They walked thru the house, in the bedroom, up the stairs, down the stairs, looked things over, asked a few questions and 15 minutes later out the door they went. Tuesday SOL 10/23/12 - Mr. Pockets goes to school

Last week there was an article in our local newspaper that I found fascinating and wanted to share it with you.  This is a story about a dog who listens as children read out loud.  It's a new program in our school district and I'm proud that our district is using this innovative program to help students learn. Animals are so loving, caring and accepting, and the students love to have someone that they can read to and to be loved unconditionally.
