Tuesday SOL 4/14/15 - Remembering
I've had a difficult time thinking of something to write about, so I thought I'd get out my "Memory Questions" and voila an idea appeared.
April 10 would have been my parents 72nd wedding anniversary and I recently answered the question "Describe your Mother's wedding dress". Not that I was there to see it, but I pulled out a picture and remember a little bit of what my Mom told me about their wedding.
They had known each other for quite a while, but didn't get married before Dad enlisted in the Army and was stationed in California. He came home on leave, asked her to marry him and return to California. She said "Yes", even though she was working, taking care of her Father and 14 year old sister; even though it was a difficult time to move so far from home; even though life was so uncertain. She said "Yes". The wedding was planned in a week. Trying to find a dress was a challenge, but Dad's brother and sister-in-law had been recently married and she offered her dress to Mom. It fit and the wedding moved forward.
The dress (according to the newspaper announcement) was silk jersey with a fingertip veil. The picture shows a full length dress, long sleeves and scoop neckline framed with lace. A simple, but beautiful dress. Mom carried a bouquet of snapdragons (her favorite flower). Don't they make a handsome couple?
They enjoyed almost 46 years of happiness together. Their love and dedication to each other is an inspiration to each of us.

Yes, they make a handsome couple. 46 years of happiness is truly inspirational. I like your idea of using memory questions to help with writing.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly do make a handsome couple. I remember seeing my mom's wedding dress. It was kept in a closet in our house. I don't remember much except it had long sleeves, a satiny feel, and a long train. My brother has a picture of my mom and dad. I will have to ask to see it.
ReplyDeleteSimply beautiful! I think I see you in your mother. Even though there were so many reasons to wait, they had faith that all would work out and it did.
ReplyDeletethis is lovely. How did you get your Memory Questions? Did you make them up yourself, or did you get them from somewhere? They are great prompts.
ReplyDeleteI found them several years ago on line. You can try doing a search for family history questions.
DeleteJust beautiful. Can you even believe it? She said yes. She did have a lot on her plate at that time of her life. I didn't realize the wedding was planned in a week! So different these days ... I would have loved living in the past planning a simple wedding. Her bouquet was amazing!
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful picture. Your story is so like my parents, too, Judy. My mom joined my father in California, too. My mother's birthday was their anniversary. Nice memories you've shared today.
ReplyDeleteI just love the old photos! What a wonderful story! I'm sure it was hard to leave family and move....so it most definitely was love!
