March SOL 10/31 - Mentoring

Last year our church decided to start a mentoring program for 8th & 9th graders.  It was successful, but the volunteers thought that maybe we would be better geared to mentor younger children.  In September we started mentoring 3rd and 8th graders, but no 8th graders showed up, so we have been working with 13 to 17 third graders.

We have one gentleman who welcomes the kids with an active game or two and then we serve some snacks.  After the snacks, the mentors each take a child and we help them with their homework (if they have any).  Otherwise we work on multiplication tables, reading, writing cursive, working on IPads, or educational games for 45 minutes. Then our wonderful cooks serve them and their families a light dinner.

Last night we had a small group because they were having a program at school. I've been working with a delightful young lady.  She struggles with math, is very good at spelling and reading.  So we work on flash cards - she does one, I do the next (sometimes right answers, sometimes not).  She loves when she catches me with a wrong answer and she can answer correctly.  When we finished our game, she started drawing a picture and hiding it from me.  When she was finished, she presented it to me and gave me a hug.

What JOY I experienced last night!

    I loved this idea when you first wrote about it. You are definitely making a difference in that girl's life. She recognizes that fact. Love her drawing.

SOL 18/31 - The Realtor's Came Yesterday

Yesterday, the realtor's came to look at our house.  Our realtor only brings his own people thru, so it wasn't too bad.  Max slept thru most of it until they went upstairs where he was sleeping.  He barked briefly, came downstairs, got petted and pampered a little.  They walked thru the house, in the bedroom, up the stairs, down the stairs, looked things over, asked a few questions and 15 minutes later out the door they went. Our realtor told me he has had a couple of calls - one from a neighbor (being nosy) and another from a realtor who said this house is exactly what his clients are looking for, but they had just left the day before it was listed.  But could they put in an offer sight unseen?  Really???  Is this just a realtor's ploy to make us feel good or is it real?  No offer yet, but who knows.  It could happen. Tuesday SOL 10/23/12 - Mr. Pockets goes to school

Last week there was an article in our local newspaper that I found fascinating and wanted to share it with you.  This is a story about a dog who listens as children read out loud.  It's a new program in our school district and I'm proud that our district is using this innovative program to help students learn. Animals are so loving, caring and accepting, and the students love to have someone that they can read to and to be loved unconditionally.
