Tuesday SOL 2/6/18 - The Hunt Has Begun
Since we've lived in our house, we have noticed that we have a large amount of raised dirt mounds trailing back and forth in the front yard and between our house and the neighbor's. We seem to have an over abundance of moles that enjoy what I call "aerating" our soil, but they call creating havoc in the lawns. Last year Ed & Len used the pistol, but to no avail. This winter, Len and our neighbor, Ed, have had some down time to investigate.
Ed went to the Extension Service to get their recommendations, Hubby searched articles on line to find the best way to get rid of these pests, which traps work the best, how to determine where they are active. etc.
Both Ed & Hubby purchased mole traps. Len got some flags to put out to see which tunnels are being used. And so, the hunt has begun. I'm getting the feeling that this might be a competition to see who can get the most moles!
Traps have been set.
Ed came ringing the doorbell last week, carrying his trap and a creature at the end of it. He was so proud that he had defeated at least one of these pests.
But now the temperatures have turned cold again and so the moles are not active at least on top of ground. So now they are waiting for warmer temps, and will watch very diligently for signs of new tunnels being dug. These moles are amazing creatures - while we have a difficult time digging a hole because of the clay and rocks in our soil, these moles just push and push their way thru new tunnels.

Ha! Ha! Moles are the enemy if you want a nice yard. My husband is constantly alert to any activity in the neighbors' yards and ours. Good luck with the hunt!
ReplyDeleteHope this problem gets resolved. We have the exact same kind of problem. Someone told us that if you attach a hose to a car's exhaust and put it in a mole hole it will cause them to come out for air and make them easy pickings. Don't know. Don't have a gun and haven't tried this.
