What were your chores as a child?

We lived on a farm until I was 10. 

We raised chickens and I can remember gathering eggs.  I also remember Mom rounding up chickens so that we could harvest them for food and I would have to pluck the feathers for further preparation.  Fortunately, this was only done once or twice a year.

Actual chores -
  • washing or drying dishes
  • picking up toys
  • feeding the dog and cats
  • cleaning my room 
  • dusting

When we moved into town, those same chores were made available, plus
  • weeding the garden
  • harvesting veggies
  • hanging clothes on the line to dry
  • mowing grass
I'm sure there were others, and as I grew older, the chores increased.  There was no allowance, it was just something we did to help out around the house.

    My chore was ironing pillow cases and hankies, only the flat items. Plus I had to make some kind of dessert. Guess that wasn't such a bad chore, since I could enjoy it later. No allowances in my house either.

    I was a city kid, so I no outdoor chores for me. I was like Elsie--ironing, small cooking chores, babysitting the youngers.

    I think it is really important that children have chores. Besides making them feel like they are part of the family unit it shows them everyone has a job to do and with all puling together things get done more quickly and things run smoothly. It teaches responsibility, something that I fear is lacking in some children, as well as parents, today.

    My chores were to keep a clean bedroom, wash dishes & put them away and always make my bed.

    Hmmm .... Madison has been asking about chores, but WITH allowance! Smart girl. But I agree, everyone needs to help out around the house!

SOL 18/31 - The Realtor's Came Yesterday

Yesterday, the realtor's came to look at our house.  Our realtor only brings his own people thru, so it wasn't too bad.  Max slept thru most of it until they went upstairs where he was sleeping.  He barked briefly, came downstairs, got petted and pampered a little.  They walked thru the house, in the bedroom, up the stairs, down the stairs, looked things over, asked a few questions and 15 minutes later out the door they went. Our realtor told me he has had a couple of calls - one from a neighbor (being nosy) and another from a realtor who said this house is exactly what his clients are looking for, but they had just left the day before it was listed.  But could they put in an offer sight unseen?  Really???  Is this just a realtor's ploy to make us feel good or is it real?  No offer yet, but who knows.  It could happen. I breathed a sigh of relief.  Max looked at me as if to say "Is that it?  Can I go back to sleep now?". ...

Tuesday SOL 10/23/12 - Mr. Pockets goes to school

Last week there was an article in our local newspaper that I found fascinating and wanted to share it with you.  This is a story about a dog who listens as children read out loud.  It's a new program in our school district and I'm proud that our district is using this innovative program to help students learn. Animals are so loving, caring and accepting, and the students love to have someone that they can read to and to be loved unconditionally.
