March 2018 SOLSC - 12/31 - Our Vacation Review - Today New Bern, NC
A week ago last Friday, we packed the car and headed to North Carolina for a week away from home. Our next door neighbor has family in Birmingham and asked if she could ride along. Birmingham was south of the route we were taking, but her son said he would pick her up south of Nashville. So the three of us were off bright and early on Friday.
The drive was uneventful (which to me is the BEST). We dropped Lavon off and continued on our way across Tennessee, stopping at several wineries along the way before we stopped for the day - 9 hours broken up with stops..
Left early on Saturday to Knoxville, Asheville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro then south of Raleigh-Durham. No we didn't stop, just passed thru so we could get to our final destination in New Bern, NC, where we stayed at the Fairview Harboures New Bern is a riverfront town tucked away on the Neuse and Trent Rivers.
New Bern was founded in 1710 by Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried and is the second oldest town in NC. He named the town after his birth place in Switzerland. You will see lots of colorful bears in the town which comes from the name "Bern" in Swiss. New Bern was the capital of the colonial government and later the First State Capitol of NC.
Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon, completed in 1770 and served as the capitol until 1778. Lots of history in this capitol building which had burned to the ground, used in several other capacities. Finally with the encouragement and money from five very influential women, North Carolina took on the reconstruction in 1952- 1959.
We were greeted at the front door by a docent dressing the head butler's costume of the 1770's. He gave us a very thorough tour adding all the little tidbits that made it interesting. There is a working kitchen and stable and the gardens will be absolutely beautiful once the weather warms up.
The Trent River is located at the back of the property and this is where to ships loaded and unloaded good.

ReplyDeleteUneventful is the best when it is a traveling day. How lucky for your friend to hitch a ride with you! What a beautiful mansion! I can't imagine people really living there. Love your tour. :-)
